  6. shooting information, and recommendations on how to configure the game

  45. 2.      Installation problems
  46. -----------------------------
  47.  
  48. 2.1     If you get a DOS error while installing the game and you are running
  49.         the version of Smartdrv which comes with DOS 6.20 or higher you may
  50.         need to disable its CD-ROM caching feature while you install.
  51.         (See the Wings of Glory Install Guide for more information.) After
  52.         the game has been installed you can reactivate the CD-ROM caching.
  53.  
  54. 2.2     The Demo must install to the default directory to install correctly.
  55.         If you want to install to a different directory specify the directory
  56.         as follows in the install. 
  57.                 Install D: C:\DEMO
  58.                 
  59.                 Note: D: equals the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive
  60.                       C:\DEMO equals the directory you wish to install to
  61.          
  62.         If you choose to install to a directory other then the default you
  63.         will need to create a directory in the directory you installed to.
  64.                 ex. at C:\(your direc9tory)\
  65.                 type MD TAPES [enter]
  66.  
  67. 3.      Sound card problems
  68. -----------------------------
  69.  
  70. 3.1     The Creative Labs AWE32 will only work in 16-bit Sound Blaster mode.
  71.         The MIDI drivers for this card conflict with the DOS-Extender used
  72.         by Wings of Glory. To get this card to work select Sound Blaster 16
  73.         for your sound card in the install.
  74.  
  75. 3.2     IRQ 10 is not supported in Wings of Glory due to conflicts
  76.         between the game's sound drivers and many computer systems.
  77.         However, in some cases the game will run with IRQ 10. To set
  78.         the sound card up for IRQ 10 you will need to edit the WG.CFG
  79.         file found in the game directory. In this file you will find
  80.         a line that reads:

  82.                 -ds251

  84.         In this example, "ds" = Sound Blaster
  85.                          "2"  = the middle digit of your I/O address
  86.                          "5"  = the IRQ setting
  87.                          "1"  = the DMA channel
  88.  
  89.         You will want to change the IRQ to "A":
  90.  
  91.                 -ds2A1
  92.  
  93. 3.3     If you are using a Roland RAP-10 or SCC-1 for music and
  94.         a Soundblaster or compatible sound card for digital effects
  95.         you must have them set at different IRQ settings.  If the IRQ
  96.         settings are the same, you will not get digital effects while
  97.         in the ground scenes.

  100. 3.4     If you have a Sound Blaster Pro sound card you will want to
  101.         select Sound Blaster and not Sound Blaster 16 as your sound
  102.         card.

  105. 3.5     If you are using Creative Lab's AWE32 Wavetable Sound Card, and you
  106.         are having problems creating enough DOS memory, the following
  107.         solution is available.  In your CONFIG.SYS there are two lines as
  108.         follows:
  109.  
  110.         DEVICE=C:\AWE32\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5
  111.         DEVICE=C:\AWE32\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS
  112.  
  113.         Both of these lines can be deleted from your CONFIG.SYS file on the
  114.         boot disk to free up more DOS memory. These drivers are not needed
  115.         for Wings of Glory.

  117.  
  118. 4.      Error Messages
  119. -----------------------------
  120.  
  121. 4.1     If your system has 16 MB of memory (or more) make sure you load
  122.         an Expanded memory manager. You will get an error if you try to
  123.         play with only Extended memory.
  124.

  127. 5.      Joysticks/Game ports
  128. -----------------------------
  129.  
  130. 5.1     If you get an error telling you that the calibration of your
  131.         joystick is incorrect make sure you only have one active joystick
  132.         port on your system. It is very common to have a built-in joystick
  133.         port as well as one that comes on most sound cards. If you find you
  134.         have more than one 15 pin joystick port make sure only one is active.
  135.         Refer to the documentation that came with your computer system or
  136.         sound card.
  137.  
  138. 5.2     In some cases faster machines (especially Pentiums) can cause
  139.         a conflict with joystick calibration. If you get an error telling
  140.         you to recalibrate your joystick you may need to install a speed
  141.         adjustable game card in your system. These cards allow you to
  142.         adjust the speed of the signal sent to the software by the
  143.         joystick.
  144.  
  145. 5.3     If you have a Sound Blaster 16 and the Wave Blaster daughter board
  146.         the joystick calibration utility will not recognize any CH product
  147.         due to a pin conflict in the hardware. Try a different brand joystick
  148.  
  149.  
  150. 5.4     If you have a Colorado Spectrum game port you will need to use a
  151.         text editor and edit the WG.CFG file in your Wings of Glory
  152.         directory. You will find a line that reads "#-c". Remove the "#" to
  153.         enable this game port. For this game port to work with the game
  154.         you will have to load NG.EXE which comes with your game port.
  155.

  157. 5.5     The rudder pedals can be activated from the options menu once in
  158.         flight. When selected you will be prompted to calibrate the pedals.
  159.

  161. 5.6     The throttle on the CH Flightstick can be activated from the options
  162.         menu once in flight. When selected you will be prompted to calibrate
  163.         the throttle.
  164.  
  165.  
  166. 5.7     The ThrustMaster has a conflict with some speed adjustable game 
  167.         cards and switches views on its own. If this happens try adjusting
  168.         your game card speed and recalibrate.
  169.  
  170. 5.8     If you have a Thrust Master be sure and NOT move the hat while the 
  171.         game loads. This may cause the game to crash to DOS with an error.
  172.

  174. 6.      Decreasing load times
  175. -----------------------------
  176.  
  177. 6.1     If your system has DOS 6.20 or higher you can minimize the time it
  178.         takes for your system to load missions and switch scenes in the game
  179.         by loading a Smartdrv that caches the CD-ROM. The following line
  180.         can be added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on your boot disk.

  182.         8 MB of Ram:
  183.         LH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 256 /X

  185.         12 MB or more:
  186.         LH C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 4096 /X

  188. 7.      Increasing game speed
  189. -----------------------------
  190.  
  191. 7.1     If you notice that the game slows down in areas with a lot of
  192.         action and large cities you can drop the detail level of the
  193.         terrain without leaving flight with the combination of the
  194.         [SHIFT] and [C] keys. This will drop the detail down 25%% each
  195.         time you press these keys. If you continue to press [SHIFT] [C]
  196.         you will cycle back to 100%%.
  197.  
  198. 7.2     In the options menu you will find an option for Hazing (far and
  199.         near). With Hazing on "far" the game will show greater detail on
  200.         the terrain, but the speed of the game will decrease. By setting
  201.         the Hazing option to "near" you can often make a noticeable
  202.         improvement on game speed, especially at high altitude.

  205. 8.      Game Tips
  206. -----------------------------
  207.  
  208. 8.1     If you find the game to easy try changing the Realism options
  209.         from their default(easy) settings to make the game more
  210.         challenging.

  213. 9.      Troubleshooting
  214. -----------------------------
  215.  
  216.         Q: I have a Sound Blaster and a fast machine with a fast video card,
  217.         but the game runs slowly.
  218.  
  219.         A: Make sure that the DMA setting for Wings of Glory matches the DRQ
  220.         jumper setting on your Sound Blaster.  Incorrect DMA settings have
  221.         been linked to game speed reductions.
  222.

  224.         Q: I have a Sound Blaster with the Wave Blaster daughter board. If I
  225.         plug my joystick into the Sound Blaster's joystick port, I don't
  226.         get any music.
  227.  
  228.         A: If you have a joystick which only has 12 pins instead of the
  229.         normal 15, and you plug it into the Sound/Wave Blaster combination's
  230.         joystick port, the card thinks that a MIDI connector has been
  231.         plugged in and stops playing MIDI music.  This is a problem
  232.         documented by Creative Labs.
  233.

  235.         Q: While in flight I see large text on the screen that reads "Rudder
  236.         out of range" or "Elevators out of range" or a similar error.
  237.  
  238.         A: Try recalibrating your joystick. This is a good indication the
  239.         joystick calibration has failed.
  240.

  242.         Q: My joystick/mouse drifts in ground scenes, but not in flight.
  243.         Also, why did I have to calibrate twice ?
  244.  
  245.         A: Wings of Glory uses two separate calibration routines for the
  246.         ground scenes and flight. If the joystick gives any problems at
  247.         any time simply press [ALT] [J] to recalibrate.

  250.         Q: My mouse goes out of control so I can not select any options.
  251.  
  252.         A: If this happens exit the game and re-enter. This should not
  253.         happen under normal game play.

  256.         Q: I have become a Wings of Glory addict.  I have stopped eating,
  257.         the plants are dying, and my spouse left me.  What can I do?
  258.  
  259.         A: We're sorry.  There is no cure for WOG addiction.
  260.         But thanks for playing and hope for an add-on.

  263.         Q: I have a Cybermaxx Virtual Reality (VR) headset.  How do I enable
  264.         it for Wings of Glory?
  265.         
  266.         A: Add the line '-hv?' to the WG.CFG file, where '?' is the number of
  267.         the COM port to which you have connected the Cybermaxx.  Use '1' for
  268.         COM1 and '2' for COM2.
  269.

  271.         Q: I have a Cybermaxx Virtual Reality (VR) headset.  When I use it,
  272.         the screen is too dark.
  273.         
  274.         A: After the game has loaded, press [ALT] [+] on the numeric keypad
  275.         to increase the brightness.

  278.         Q: I have a Forte VFX1 VR headset.  How do I enable it for
  279.         Wings of Glory?
  280.  
  281.         A: Add the line '-hf' to the WG.CFG file.  You must have the
  282.         60HERTZ.COM and VFX1.COM TSRs loaded before running Wings of Glory.
  283.         Wings of Glory does not support the CyberBat.

  305.    CATALOG.EXE is a Windows program which allows you to preview some
  306.    of the upcoming Origin Releases.  To access it, run Windows,
  307.    Choose Run from the Program Manager File Menu and type:

  309.        [drive]:\CATALOG\CATALOG.EXE
  310.        where drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
  311.        For example, if your CD-ROM Drive is Drive D you would type:
  312.        D:\CATALOG\CATALOG.EXE

  315. 12.     Headset Support
  316. -------------------------------------

  318.         The Demo currently has limited support for the CYBERMAXX VR Helmet.
  319.         There may be a patch available in the near future. For information
